Am I suitable for hair transplant?

If you have started to notice a receding hairline, a thinning crown, or general thinning of hair spread over the top area of the head with the hair on the sides of the scalp not effected this is a good indication that you are suffering from male pattern hair loss and would be a suitable candidate for a hair transplant. Before any treatment a detailed consultation will be carried out by an experienced hair transplant doctor to ensure you are suitable for treatment and to explain the treatment procedure and results in detail.

What causes hair loss?

Male or Female Pattern (Genetic) Hair Loss only affects the top and front of the scalp this is due to the follicles in this area being highly receptive to specific hormones that causes hair loss. The most common causes of hair loss are genetics and hormones, followed by illness and trauma. However, causes of male and female hair loss differ, with males being far more susceptible, in fact up to 50% of men will have experienced some degree of hair loss by the time they reach 50.

What happens during a hair transplant procedure?

There are two different types of hair transplant techniques available at the Dr Leah Clinic. During consultation your hair transplant doctor will assess your hair growth and pattern and advise which technique is most suitable for you and why.

1) FUT Technique

The FUT technique is the most commonly used technique for patients and is seen as one of the most effective.

During treatment the surgeon will apply local anaesthetic to the donor area (the sides of the head). Under a microscope a thin strip of hairy scalp will be taken and all follicular units separated. The area the strip is removed from will then be stitched with absorbable stitches.

The recipient area (the area that hair will regrow) will then be numbed and pinprick incisions will be made. The follicular unit grafts taken from the donor area (sides of the head) will then be placed into the incisions.

2) FUE Technique

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. This technique uses a microscopic punch to remove each individual hair graft. (Unlike FUT which sees a strip of hair extracted).

The same technique for inserting the grafts is the same as FUT technique (above).

When am I likely to see results?

It will normally take approximately 12 weeks before there is visible hair growth in the treated area as once the grafts are placed, the hair bulbs tend to remain in the dormant phase until the 12-week period.

Some hairs will start growing before then and some will take longer but by 6 months, most of the hair will be growing and have reached a length of an inch or two.

Will all my hair grow back?

Totally amount of regrowth will vary between patients and can depend on variables such as the degree of hair loss and type of hair also the stage at which you undertake the procedure eg early stage of hair loss versus significant hair loss.

However, many men in their 40’s and 50’s who are quite bald still do get a very good result by transplanting the front 2/3 of their scalp. This hair frames their face again which makes them look and feel younger.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients will need two sessions of hair transplantation.

Who will perform my treatment?

Our Hair Transplant doctor – has been performing high quality, patient centred, hair transplant surgery since 1996. Originally a GP with a special interest in Dermatology, he found his forte in treating hair loss and over the past 20 years has seen many changes in the science of hair loss, as well as hair transplant techniques and was one of the first, new generation of doctors to learn strip micro graft hair transplant surgery. This had replaced the more primitive technique of punch grafting only a few years previously. Since then, his career has mirrored the ever improving standards of modern hair transplantation, including leading the way in many areas and contributing worldwide to the state of the art knowledge and was the first to introduce FUE (follicular unit extraction) into the UK in 2003.

Are there any side effects?

Surgery doesn’t damage surrounding hair but can occasionally accelerate the loss of fragile hair. This can be reduced by taking Propecia beforehand, at least four weeks previously.

How much does the consultation and procedure cost?

Consultation with experienced hair transplant surgeon - £70

The overall cost of the transplant will be dependent on the number of grafts required and will be discussed at consultation. However, transplant start from £6000
