How does pregnancy affect the body?
Even when you've given birth and your pregnancy journey is at an end, your body is unlikely to be exactly as it was before. For example, stretch marks and excess fat are common souvenirs of childbearing, plus many new mums experience urine leakage due to weakened pelvic floor muscles.
Loose skin is also common – although it's worth noting that every woman is different, and whether you develop loose skin will depend on factors like the elasticity of your skin, how much it stretches during your pregnancy, and how quickly you lose weight afterwards. The quicker the weight loss and the less elastic the skin, the more likely that loose skin will be present.
The 'C-section shelf' is yet another postpartum complaint that we often see here at Dr Leah Clinics. Women who give birth via caesarean section can sometimes end up with excess skin where the incision was made. In some cases, this so-called 'C shelf' can be quite persistent. While dieting and exercise can help to shed excess fat after having a baby, a healthy lifestyle will not always be enough to reduce the appearance of C-section scars and the look of pregnancy bulges.
How does pregnancy affect the face?
The complexion of your face may also need time to return to normal once your baby has arrived.
Pregnancy-related acne and melasma can hang around for a while after childbirth. Additionally, your skin may look dull and tired in general due to hormone changes and lack of sleep.
Post-pregnancy body treatments
Dr Leah Clinics offer effective tretments for each of the face and body changes discussed above. Please note that you cannot undergo any treatments or take any prescription products while breastfeeding or still pregnant.
Here's a rundown of our very best post-pregnancy treatments:
- Mummy Tummy Makeover is our premier post-pregnancy treatment. If you're looking for a way to target the loose skin and stretch marks your pregnancy left behind, Dr Leah's Mummy Tummy Makeover can achieve great results with zero surgery. This treatment combines laser skin resurfacing with radio frequency skin tightening to help restore your skin to its pre-pregnancy glory.
- Fat freezing is a very popular type of fat reduction treatment. A quick and easy one-off treatment can be enough to noticeably reduce fat on the stomach, arms, flanks or thighs.
- Emsella is a non-invasive treatment for stress incontinence. Sitting on the Emsella chair strengthens the weakened pelvic floor muscles very quickly, helping you to control post-pregnancy urine leakage.
- Aqualyx fat dissolving injections can be used to reduce stubborn pockets of fat. This is a great treatment for dissolving the fat pocket that can sometimes form above a C-section scar.
- Obagi Blue Peel Radiance can be helpful if you're suffering from acne.
- Obagi Nu-Derm (available by prescription only) is our best treatment for most forms of hyperpigmentation, including pregnancy-related melasma.
- Profhilo is an injectable 'skin booster' treatment that can be very effective for restoring the luminosity of a tired, dehydrated complexion.
- Hydr02 is a luxury facial treatment that aims to restore your skin's natural glow.
