Thread lifts are a trending topic.

At Dr. Leah Clinic, we have featured in The Guardian and Saturday Times Newspaper in the last month alone for our industry-leading, award-winning thread lift procedure – The Silhouette Soft Lift.

Dr. Leah has performed the most procedures of its kind in the UK and is widely acknowledged as ‘the very best’ for Silhouette Soft Thread lifts. But why are more people than ever choosing to have a thread lift over a surgical face lift?

Indeed Dr. Leah Clinic has seen a surge in clients requesting the treatment in the last two years, with patients flying from across Europe to undergo the facial lifting procedure. The number of searches for thread lifts online is increasing month on month, with beauty bibles such as Tatler recently deeming facial thread lifts as a “life-line’ for facial sagging.

To understand why thread lifts are swiftly becoming the most popular treatment for facial rejuvenation, we must delve into the history of its surgical counterpart - the traditional face lift.

The History of Facial Lifting.

A historical surgical procedure

Traditional face lift surgery had existed for over 100 years when in 1916, surgeon Erich Lexer first performed the procedure. His method involved lifting the skin above the facial muscles, pulling it back over the ear, and cutting off any excess skin. For nearly 60 years, the Dr.Lexer technique of face lifting remained the fashion; however, this procedure often resulted in the typical over-tight, overstretched look. This ‘windswept’ outcome resulted from the facial skin being too tightly pulled across the earlobe and underlying tissue not being addressed, which is the root cause of facial sagging.

It was not until the 1970s when Dr. Paul Tessier tweaked the Dr. Lexer method to address the superficial muscular aponeurotic system where this procedure really came into its own. The Dr Tessier method focused on repositioning sagging, soft tissue under the skin to a higher, more youthful position prior to removing excess skin. The result: a significant lifting of the jowls, sagging cheeks, and nasolabial folds. The Dr. Tessier technique is still widely used today and is otherwise known as the SMAS facelift.

And so, the SMAS facelift begins the practice of facial lifting and sculpting via the deeper layers of facial tissue and muscle. This evolution brings about the transition into the non-surgical facelift with the non-invasive thread lift.

An Evolution to less Invasive Facial Lifting…

Let’s now discuss thread lifting and how it compares to this surgical approach to facial rejuvenation.

A thread lift technique uses the innovative aspect of the SMAS lift, which goes beneath the surface of the skin to lift the underlying tissue and address facial sagging. There are, however, key differences between the two procedures which are making the thread lift a popular choice for those worried about going under the knife.

Firstly a thread lift is not as invasive as a SMAS lift and does not involve any cutting of the skin, which results in less downtime and potential complications associated with a traditional surgical facelift. The thread lift process involves a fine needle being inserted into the face; to (like the SMAS facelift) address the deeper layers of facial matter below the surface of the skin. This enables a more effective and long-lasting lift to the face without any cutting of the skin, which can result in unsightly scarring. The thread lift needle delivers a thread with tiny cones attached to it, which painlessly hook into a subcutaneous layer of fat in the face. The threads are then pulled tightly upwards to lift the layer of fat in the face, resulting in a subtle lift. Like the SMAS facelift, this treatment raises and sculpts the jowl area, noticeably reducing the look of nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Another key benefit to a thread lift is the production of new collagen caused by the cones, which helps to plump and rejuvenate the face.

The Silhouette Soft Lift technique…

At Dr. Leah Clinic, we are proud to lead the field in the most effective of thread lifting procedures. We use the most premium brand of threads - Silhouette Soft Threads, which are made out of Poly-L-Lactic Acid material and have greater longevity in comparison to PDO threads (another popular type of thread lift)

A Silhouette Soft Lift at Dr. Leah Clinic lasts around 18 months vs. the typical six-month lifespan of PDO threads. Silhouette Soft threads are also superior in terms of immediate lifting effects and collagen production.

Why are thread-lifts increasing in popularity?

Recent years have seen a rise in celebrities having some thread lift help. The Eye thread lift, in particular has heightened in demand over the last year with the suggestion that high profile models such as Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid have had the treatment to achieve a lateral brow lift effect (commonly known as the Fox eye lift)

This move-in popular culture to embrace non-surgical face lifting methods has undoubtedly affected the popularity of the thread lift treatment. The trend for facial lifting has also been popularised through viral Tik Tok and social media videos striving to achieve a lifted look to the eye and lower face through the clever use of makeup and face lifting tape. While these methods are undoubtedly creative, a Silhouette Soft Lift offers a longer-term solution and unlike a traditional surgical facelift does not involve months of recovery and 15k plus price tag.

Thread lifting at Dr. Leah Clinic can be conducted in less than an hour, with quick results and minimal downtime.

Prices start from £2200

The Dr Leah Lift, as reviewed in The Metro and The London Evening Standard, was created by award winning Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Leah Totton and is available exclusively at Dr Leah Cosmetic Skin Clinics (Moorgate and Loughton).

The Dr Leah Lift combines the power of 3 different treatments to provide effective, natural results. Dr Leah believes in making her clients look like the best possible versions of themselves (not like someone else!) and as such has pioneered the Dr Leah Lift using three techniques to stimulate your bodies own ability to produce collagen and elastin to firm, lift and naturally rejuvenate the face. This treatment is ideal for lifting the mid-face and sagging jowls, firming the neck and rejuvenating dull complexions.

Prior to treatment, each client will be offered a complimentary face to face consultation with Dr Leah Totton herself (usually £50), where your suitability for this treatment will be assessed. If you are deemed suitable then the treatment steps will be as follows;

(1) Ultherapy Ultrasound Facelift

Ultherapy is a safe, FDA approved, micro-focused ultrasound treatment that effectively targets sagging, loose skin. After just one treatment, a fresher, firmer and more youthful appearance can be achieved without the need for surgery or downtime.

How does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy relies on micro-focused ultrasound to bypass the skin’s surface and deliver targeted deep tissue wound healing and the regeneration of important support structures in the skin such as collagen and elastin. By using focused energy alongside ultrasound imaging, the practitioner is able to deliver precise treatment to the location(s) where it will be most beneficial, resulting in an extremely effective lifting treatment.

If you were to have this treatment as a standalone and not part of the Dr Leah Lift, it would usually cost £2800.

(2) Silhouette Soft Thread Lift

Designed to redefine the face for those looking for restored volume and reduced sagging. The thread lift treatment takes approximately 1 hour to perform and involves pulling a thread under the skin of the jaw line and lower face and mechanically pulling it upwards, lifting the mid and lower face to improve sagging.

Silhouette Soft® is a thread lift treatment that represents a safe and highly effective alternative to surgical face lifts and neck lifts. The threads used are made of the same substance that is used for sutures, orthopaedic pins and bone fracture treatments.

How does a Thread Lift work?

Thread cones are inserted into the face to lift sagging skin, creating a firmer, younger look. After the treatment, the threads will gradually anchor themselves to your tissue and stimulate the body’s collagen production, creating a smooth, shapely appearance that’s completely natural.

If you were to have this treatment as a standalone and not part of the Dr Leah Lift, it would usually cost £2100.

(3) Obagi Blue Radiance Peel

This peel is one of the leading medical skincare treatments currently available and Obagi exclusively use only the most effective prescription-strength ingredients to repair, regenerate and transform your skin. The Obagi Blue Radiance Peel is a gentle light to medium peel which, in just 30 minutes, leaves you with radiant, glowing and smoother skin.

If you were to have this treatment as a standalone and not part of the Dr Leah Lift, it would usually cost £90.

This month in my Evening Standard Column, where I am the resident cosmetic medical expert, I discussed treatments for facial sagging.

A large number of patients who visit my Moorgate Clinic do so to improve the “pulled down” look of their face and jowls or their neck sagging.

Over time, as gravity and collagen loss take their toll, the skin's underlying structure descends leaving dropping undesired jowls, a saggy neck and a less taught appearance of the skin. Often my female patients will report that they have noticed this “drop” of the face happened at an accelerated level around the time of menopause and this is attributed to a sharp decline in the amount of oestrogen which is inherently linked to collagen production.

I am well known as a “Botox Doctor” performing thousands of Botox treatments per year at my London Cosmetic Clinic, I do also spend a large percentage of my time now specialising in non-surgical facelift treatments for the face and neck. As one of the UK experts in Silhouette Soft Thread Lifts I have performed more thread lift treatments than most UK doctors this year, I presented at the National Conference for Silhouette Soft in June and attended the international World Expert meeting for Silhouette Soft thread lift in Barcelona in October. I have had fantastic results with patients travelling from as far as South America to undergo this non surgical facelift treatment at my London clinic.

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, also known as the “one stitch lift” or ‘puppet lift’ takes approximately 1 hour to perform, with local anaesthetic and gives minimal downtime and subtle but impressive lifting results. Treatment is also suitable to lift brows and neck. Results last approximately 18 months. The standard number of threads needed for face is 4 threads at a cost of £1520.

At Dr Leah Clinic we believe that subtle natural looking results are key with little or no downtime are the key.

Shirley's Story

One of the patients I treated recently is Shirley (67), a mother of five, who had a silhouette soft thread lift procedure done by myself  recently for her daughter’s wedding what she thought about the treatment and the results.

I could see the lifting results immediately! My face felt tighter, and slightly tender for the next couple of days, but not painful”

“I didn’t tell my daughter I had had the treatment, but on the day of the wedding she kept saying ‘”Wow mum, you look amazing!’ My niece who hasn’t seen me in several years commented that she ‘hoped to look as well as I do when she is my age, as I never seem to look any older!’”

“I am very happy with my Silhouette Soft treatment. I knew I could trust Dr Leah to do a great job; she’s brilliant! I feel really good about myself at the minute, I look forward to enjoying the new lease of life my refreshed image has given me."
